April 28, 2016
For the first time in over one month, UConn-AAUP and the administration met on April 26, 2016 for three hours of negotiations. We made several attempts to secure other negotiating dates during the months of March and April without success.
Thanks go out to Professor Trudi Bird who attended the session as an observer.
With the reluctance of the legislature to review any contracts this legislative session, and the Governor directing his agency heads to not submit any newly negotiated contract to the legislature for approval, UConn-AAUP focused on two issues. The first issue was trying to set an agreement to suspend negotiations until the Fall, or even Spring when the legislature is back in session. The second issue was to continue to discuss non-economic issues, in particular Promotion, Tenure and Reappointment (PTR) and Departmental Governance.
The first part of negotiations focused on re-working the potential document that would preserve the Temporary Agreements, proposals and counterproposals, and any other agreements we would make within the current contract.
The second part of the meeting focused on our submission of a counter-proposal on Departmental Shared Governance and the Administration handing us a proposal on Promotion, Tenure and Reappointment. When asked for an explanation of their proposal, they were unable to offer one, and said that an explanation would come at a subsequent session with someone from the Provost office present.
After hearing some suggestion to the Departmental Governance proposal from the administration, we were able to reach agreement on the proposal and signed-off on a TA. (Posted on our website)
We will seek at least one more meeting before the July 4th weekend.
