September 1, 2015- University Hires Outside Law Firm
On September 1, 2015, Attorney Michael Eagen, UCONN Office of Faculty ad Staff Labor Relations, announced that the Administration had entered into an agreement with the law firm McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney, & Carpenter LLP to represent their interests at the bargaining table. This is the first time in history of faculty collective bargaining at UCONN that this strategy has been employed.
UConn-AAUP has learned that the initial cost of the representation will be $250,000 with an option to re-negotiate the agreement should bargaining get extended past January 1, 2016. Of course, this is money that could be spent in other ways to benefit the teaching and research mission of the University.
The firm touts on their website that they have “defended numerous college and university clients…in the state and federal courts against claims by faculty members asserting…de facto tenure…unlawful denial of tenure…discriminatory denial of promotion to senior academic rank, detenuring and dismissal of faculty members…” I guess it is something to be proud of in their circles.
The firm and the Administration have agreed that Attorney John Peirano will lead the negotiations. He has had experience negotiating higher education contracts throughout New Jersey.
